4E 201 in skyrim is like…did you hear that the high king is dead. did you hear that the harbinger of the companions is dead. did you hear that the thieves’ guildmaster is dead. did you hear that the archmage of winterhold is dead. did you hear that the headmaster of the bards’ college is hosting burning man weekly
one thing I like is when people take the fact Cass learned a lot of her language skills from 2000’s trash TV and apply it to different time periods, like having her learn from YouTube or plays
btw almost every single thing pagans credit with “the reason we aren’t respected as a religion” is wrong. it’s not community infighting, or woo magic users, or pop culture pagans. it’s the fact we live in a culturally Christian society that teaches all other religions are “primitive and backwards”, and considers similarity and proximity to Christianity to be the basis by which other religions are evaluated as “respectable” or “superstitious nonsense”. if you think that you would get “respect” from mainstream Christians and secular people because you’re a strict recon who never argues with other pagans or does anything considered “weird” within paganism, you’re fooling yourself.
i wonder why it is that so many people are so very concerned with getting “respect” from mainstream religious groups and the secular world, while you can’t be bothered to treat other polytheists and pagans with respect as soon as they in any way challenge your personal comfort, or jeapordize your perceived “respectability” by association.
Instead of “respect me because my practice is legitimate, unlike Those pagans” we should be saying “respect us because not adhering to mainstream religious standards shouldn’t be met with discrimination”.
I use the word discrimation here to refer to times my family abused me and threatened me with homelessness; times coworkers singled me out for being “satanic”; the way the psych ward refused to give me my pagan books, and I was once again targeted by Christians and nurses once they found out; the way that mental health professionals 100% treat our religions as symptoms of mental illness, even if all you do is admit to being a polytheist; and all of this happened explicitly, in their own words, because they find out I was practicing pagan. Besides which, there are places in the U.S. where you have to be Christian to hold public office -and now, it’s now legal for businesses to discriminate based on differing religious beliefs. Saying people can and do discriminate against us is not the same thing as claiming to be systematically oppressed. It’s just candidly acknowledging that most of us have to keep their religion a secret from peers, coworkers, family, and healthcare professionals, and that people finding out about our faith really can cause material harm in our day-to-day lives.
This is all to say, at some point, this may become something more dangerous than bad optics. we as a community ought to take solidarity between all of us more seriously. It’s the right thing to do as well as a necessary precaution.
Just putting this out there to let people know to watch what they post because you can be found and if you think that the government can’t do this …
Well, you better think again!!
Reminder that in 2017 4chan played capture the flag with Shia LaBeouf. Without any kind of a retail store to use for landmarks they got a rough estimate of the flags location from a livestream. They used the position of the sun to narrow it down to a specific time zone, they tracked the flight paths of planes seen flying overhead to further narrow it down. Then someone in the area drove around honking his horn while viewers on the livestream told him if he was getting closer until he found and stole the flag.
